Dear EMGS Officer,

Due to a family medical emergency, I had to delay my return to Malaysia and missed a trimester as well as the three-month period for visa renewal. My university’s visa unit advised me to wait until my current visa expires and then apply for a new one.

Could you please confirm:
1. Will letting my current visa expire cause any problems, since I cannot cancel it from outside Malaysia?
2. Will this affect my application for a new student visa?

  Kindly note that the Malaysian Immigration Department might allow certain international students to renew their student pass if the current pass expiry has not lapsed for more than 3 months. Allowing your current visa to expire may lead to complications regarding your immigration status in Malaysia. It is advisable to consult with the relevant authorities or your institution’s visa unit for guidance on how to proceed in this situation. The student pass approval is entirely at the discretion of the Malaysian Immigration Department.
