Dear EMGs officer,

I saw some people here asking about the dependent pass bank statement requirement changing into enormous amounts so I contact my university and they told me that for one dependent I need to show 20,000 RM in the bank statement. While they previously told me it was 5,000 RM and that this is a new rule by the Immigration.

Can you confirm if this is actually true? Does this new rule exist? I still haven’t managed to get my newborn inside Malaysia once since the lockdown and have been stuck outside for more than 10 months and already losing a lot of money on our rents, and for me especially losing a lot of money (more than 17,000 RM parking fee) so far because I left my new car in the airport.

This new ruling would really impact us very negatively. Me and my wife are fresh Masters graduates who are doing now PhDs on full tuition fee scholarship. We don’t have that much life savings and already we have been paying so much. 5,000 RM was an understandable amount for one dependent but 20,000 RM is just way too much. If this is true can you please tell Immigration to reconsider?

What should we do if we can’t afford to have that much in our accounts untouched? Keep our baby behind like an orphan and go to Malaysia alone? (Whenever Malaysia opens). I am asking you to reason with the Immigration that students who have dependents are only the postgraduate students and they are mostly like us, trying to sustain themselves without their families. We mostly don’t work to have such big amounts in our banks, please don’t treat our dependents like the dependents of people who are working in the country.

Kindly, please confirm if the rule is true, and if it is, please speak on our behalf to reason with the immigration to keep it at 5,000 RM which was a reasonable amount. And also, kindly allow us to even come back, we have been waiting for good news for so long but instead, we hear this, our mental health is devastated, all our belongings are in Malaysia and we are unable to even go get them. Kindly reason.
