Based on my experience in 2019. If you already applied for 1 year renewal, you can expect the following, provided all other documents are complete:
1. You may get 4-5 month visa, with a note saying “To renew the passport”.

2. Is your visa valid but will expire within less than a month from now?If either case applies to you, be proactive and ask your university if they can or need to apply for another special pass.

Thank you Mohammed. I’m in Malaysia, and my visa expired, while my VAL approval is with the immigration. So I’m applying through my university, they will get EMGS permission, then can apply for special pass to continue the application. (I did not leave, so no airport, in this case)

Mmmmmm. This is an area that I am still trying to navigate in the system. If a student has an expired visa, how would the immigration department process his application for renewal? The immigration will to the best of my knowledge require either a valid visa or a valid special pass.

Now, I know that the uni is getting approval from EMGS, for them to apply for special pass on my behalf. (The dilemma was where & when the special pass process should start)

Special pass request is to immigration not emgs.

If your application for the sticker goes through emgs and your current pass has expired, then emgs will tell you that the immigration department needs your university to submit a valid sticker or special pass.

Thank you Mohammed for the specific answer. In my case UTP goes through EMGS. So currently it’s 35% with the immigration, they will notify EMGS, then the university, then I can apply. InshaAllah.
