Based on my experience in 2019. If you already applied for 1 year renewal, you can expect the following, provided all other documents are complete:

1. You may get 4-5 month visa, with a note saying “To renew the passport”.
2. You may get a refund, after the renewal is completed.

What you can also do:
1. Ask your embassy to extend the validity of your passport for at least a year (if possible). This can be stamp on the special observation page of your passport.
2. If you get the extension and the 1 year visa. You will have to transfer the sticker to your new passport, when it’s issued (Consult with your University).
3. Previous passport should be cancelled, when receiving the new passport (At your embassy).

Ultimate, incase you receive a 4,5, or 6 month visa on the old passport. You will eventually have to apply again for renewal (As usual, with your new passport). I hope this helps 🙂
