Tip about special pass and renewal timeline:
I am sharing with you my experience so that it may help you reduce unnecessary delays.

1. I arrived in Malaysia on 16 Dec with an expired visa but of course I had the TA and Sev both valid

2. The passport control stamped my passport with a Special Pass. It allowed me to stay in Malaysia until January 15 to renew my visa.
3. The renewal process took longer than expected because of payment issues.
4. On Jan 15 my special pass expired. I became an overstay but my passport was with the university.
5. After the issue for renewal was resolved, my universoty asked me to paynfor special pass.
6. My university applied for a special pass and it was stamped on my passport with a validity until Feb 17.
7. Automatically, the univeraory proceeded afterwards to pay for the sticker.
8. I finally got the sticker with a new one year visa.

IMPORTANT: The immigration department will NOT process any renewal request unless you have a valid visa. Since many of us have expired visas already, the special pass given at the airport should be valid. If not, we get another special pass. It is then that the immigration department will proceed with the sticker.
