More than six months of my application sitting immobile at 32%. My mental health is in tatters. Arbitrary border control measures that privilege every other visa-holding category over students don’t protect Malaysian lives any more than a robust quarantine regime does on its own — all they achieve is destroying the lives of people who made a (seemingly misguided) choice to trust that Malaysia would deliver on its reputation as an emerging global leader in higher education.

I understand that people often don’t understand that many students are adults; professionals; people who are desperate beyond measure to return to the lives and networks and even families that they have established in Malaysia. And I understand that nobody in a position to affect immigration policy will ever read this. Unfortunately, there’s no way for me to communicate with anyone who can make a difference, so screaming into the void is all I can do.

I’m so tired.
