To be on the safe side apply accordingly it does have a 6 month validity but after you’ve been registered by the uni there is a 21 days period for student pass approval process during which your VAL must be valid

Apart from that the immigration at the airport will require your VAL copy your passport and offer letter from the respective uni

If you’re going only for a visit then only book a one way ticket and if you dont have anyone in malaysia whom you can stay with book a hotel and the limit to carry on a plane to the best of my knowledge is about 10,000 of any currency but it is preferred to travel with dollars now its upto you how much you would require for the trip

You should look for a backup you wont be able to get VAL in time because if you are at 20% it means it will take more time

If your country doesnot require single entry visa to enter malaysia then you may be fine otherwise you wont be able to get the required documents in time you should look for a backup too
